Canada in the Age of “Soft Tariffs and Hard Truths”

Governments are cheerfully announcing that “tariffs turned out to be softer than expected,” while the Canadian economy is quietly writing a sick note and heading for the couch.
A brand-new forecast from Oxford Economics reads like this:
“We’re grateful they didn’t hit us with a sledgehammer… but it’s still going to hurt.”

GDP? Then vs. Now:

The growth forecast for 2025? Just 0.7% (and that’s with all the chants about immigration-driven growth). And 2026? –0.2% contraction. So we climb a little… just enough to fall harder.
Who’s to blame? Tariffs? Unemployment? China? The U.S.? Yes. And most of all — us, for thinking “maybe we’ll be spared.”

Consumer Spending? On Ice.

Oxford’s forecast includes:
* 200,000 jobs lost in the second half of 2025
* Unemployment peaking at 7.7%
And when there’s no job — there’s no shopping. No shopping? No growth. People are tightening their belts, no one’s buying homes, and even real estate agents are starting to scratch their heads (which, frankly, is a red flag in itself).

Global Trade: “Now Entering a Patchy Zone”

Sure, tariffs came in lower. But in the process, global uncertainty skyrocketed. The U.S. is picking trade fights with half the planet. We’re beefing with China. Everyone’s mad at everyone. Global trade has gone from a four-lane freeway to a pothole-ridden dirt road with oncoming tractors.
Canada’s response? A retaliatory 25% tariff on about $95 billion in U.S. goods. Kind of like waving a butter knife at a tank — but hey, it’s the thought that counts.
“All in all, this leaves Canada-U.S. tariff levels 4 points lower than we feared,” says Oxford. Translation: “Still bad. Just not doomsday bad.”

Bank of Canada: Holding the Line (and Its Breath)

CPI might drop to 2%? Great. Then it might spike back to 3%? Sure. The Bank of Canada is keeping rates at 2.75% and projecting calm — though we suspect the staff is making stronger tea these days.
“We might see one or two more 25-point cuts… but only if inflation behaves,” economists say. Translation: “We don’t know either, but we’re doing our best not to panic.”

So What Now?

As always — breathe, budget wisely, and invest with a helmet on. Remember: “recession” is just a fancy word economists use instead of “we may have messed up.”
Just hang in there — it’s only two more budget crises, one trade spat, and a few press conferences away from spring 2026.
Until then, keep calm and pray your job isn’t “non-essential.”

Oxford
